Awkward Items Storage - One Size, Doesn't Fit All.

Storage for Awkward Items With Clever Design

We’ve all been there, you’ve just finished a complete overhaul of your warehouse or storeroom storage. The metal shelving is gleaming, the labels are straight, and there’s a place for every standard-sized box. It looks perfect.

Then, you spot them. In the corner, leaning precariously against the wall, is a 4-metre length of copper piping, three sets of ladders, and a crate so wide it won't fit on a standard 600mm deep shelf. These are the "bulky oddities": the items that refuse to play by the rules.

If you leave them on the floor, they’re a trip hazard. If you lean them against the wall, they’ll eventually slide down and take out a colleague’s shins. At IronStor, we know that a "one-size-fits-all" approach to Industrial Storage Solutions usually ends up fitting nobody quite right. Because we manufacture our gear in Stoke-on-Trent, we’ve seen every awkward shape imaginable.

Here is how you tackle the "problem items" and reclaim your floor space.

1. The Long and the Lean: Pipes, Conduit, and Timber

Items like pipes, tubes, and timber are notoriously difficult. They are heavy, they roll, and they are usually much longer than any standard bay of storage shelving.

The Solution: Cantilever and Modified Racking

For very long items, you need a storage system that doesn't have front uprights to get in the way. Cantilever racks are the gold standard here, but if you are working within a smaller store room, you can adapt your Heavy Duty Racking by using open-ended bays or custom-built frames.

Pro Tip: If you’re storing flexible items like plastic conduit, they need support along their entire length to stop them from sagging. We often recommend adding a solid timber or steel "bed" across multiple racking arms to create a continuous shelf.

2. The Tall and Flat: Ladders and Boards

Ladders are the bane of a tidy warehouse. They’re rarely used every day, yet they take up a massive amount of "footprint" if they are laid down.

The Solution: Vertical Dividers or High-Level Wall Hooks

Why store them flat when you can store them standing up? By using vertical dividers: essentially tall "fingers" of steel that stick out from the wall or a racking frame: you can create slots for ladders to slide into. It keeps them upright, secure, and easy to grab.

If floor space is at an absolute premium, look up. The space above your head is usually wasted. Heavy-duty wall hooks or ceiling-mounted brackets can get those ladders completely off the ground.

  • Zoning Tip: Place ladders near the entrance or in a dedicated "equipment zone" so people aren't carrying 3-metre aluminium hazards through tight shelving aisles.

3. Bulky Oddities: The "Wide-Load" Boxes

Sometimes you get a delivery of items in boxes that are just slightly too deep or too wide for a standard shelf. You try to balance them, but they overhang, blocking the aisle or looking like they’re about to take a dive.

The Solution: Bespoke Depth Shelving

This is where those "one-size-fits-all" imports fail. Most imported shelving comes in fixed increments (usually 450mm or 600mm). If your box is 700mm, you’re stuck.

Because IronStor products are made-to-order in the UK, we don't have those limitations. If you need a run of shelving that is exactly 750mm deep to accommodate a specific engine part or a long-form crate, we just make it.

4. Designing Your Layout for the Unexpected

When you are planning your Storage Design, don't just account for the items you have now. Account for the weird stuff you might get next month.

The "60/30/10" Rule

  • 60% Standard Shelving: For your everyday boxes and bins.
  • 30% Heavy Duty/Deep Racking: For larger pallets or bulky spares.
  • 10% "Awkward Zone": A dedicated area with open floor space or custom brackets for pipes, ladders, and oversized kit.

Simple Layout Sketch Ideas:

  1. The Perimeter Strategy: Keep your standard Industrial Storage in the centre rows, and use the long perimeter walls for your "awkward" items. Pipes can run horizontally along the top of the wall, with ladders clipped vertically below them.
  2. The End-Cap Approach: Use the ends of your racking rows. You can bolt custom frames to the side of a racking upright to hold rolls of cable or long rods without taking up any extra aisle width.

5. Why "Made in the UK" Matters for Awkward Items

When you're dealing with standard cardboard boxes, any cheap shelf will probably do the job for a while. But when you’re hanging 50kg of steel piping or trying to secure a heavy ladder, you need to trust the metal.

Our factory in Stoke-on-Trent uses high-grade British steel. This isn't just about patriotism; it’s about structural integrity. When we design a bespoke solution for a client: be it a specialist workbench or a custom rack for "bulky oddities": we can guarantee the load-bearing stats because we controlled the weld.

Unlike the "flat-pack" imports that arrive on a slow boat from overseas, our gear is built for the rigours of a real British workshop. If you have a specific "problem item," you can literally pick up the phone and talk to the people who will be cutting the steel for it.

6. Safety First: Don’t Forget the Snagging

Storing awkward items isn't just about being tidy; it's about health and safety. A pipe sticking out two inches into a forklift path is an accident waiting to happen.

  • Labelling: Always label the maximum weight capacity of custom racks.
  • Visibility: Use high-visibility tape on the ends of long items (like pipes) that might protrude slightly.
  • Floor Fixings: If you are using tall, vertical storage for ladders or boards, ensure the racking is securely bolted to the floor or wall. Never rely on the weight of the items to keep the rack stable.

Summary Checklist for Your Store Room

  • Is it off the floor? If it's a ladder or a pipe, it shouldn't be sitting on the concrete.
  • Is it accessible? You shouldn't have to move three other things to get to the one "awkward" item.
  • Is it secure? Use straps or "fingers" to prevent round items from rolling.
  • Can we go vertical? Always look at the ceiling and high walls before giving up on space.
