7 Mistakes You're Making with Chemical Storage

When you're running a busy workshop, a laboratory, or a warehouse, it’s easy to treat chemical storage as an afterthought. You might think that as long as the lids are on tight and the bottles are tucked away in a corner, you’re doing just fine.
But chemical safety isn't just about avoiding a spill; it’s about meeting strict COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations and ensuring that your team goes home safe every single day.

1. Sorting Chemicals Alphabetically
It sounds logical, doesn't it? If you need "Acetone," you look under A. If you need "Bleach," you look under B. However, in the world of chemical safety, alphabetising is one of the most dangerous things you can do.
Sorting by name often puts incompatible substances right next to each other. You could end up with a strong oxidiser sitting inches away from a flammable solvent. If there’s a small leak or a tremor, you aren't just looking at a mess; you're looking at a potential fire or explosion.
How to fix it:
- Segment by hazard class: Group your chemicals by their hazard symbols first (flammables, corrosives, toxics, etc.).
- Alphabetise within groups: Once you’ve separated them into safe zones, then you can go ahead and alphabetise for easy finding.
- Use designated zones: Use different Safety Approved Cabinets for different hazard classes to ensure they never mix.
2. Storing Incompatible Materials Together
Even if you aren't sorting alphabetically, you might be tempted to "just find a space" for a new delivery. Mixing acids with alkalis, or oxidising agents with flammables, is a recipe for disaster. For example, if bleach (a base) mixes with an acidic cleaner, it can release toxic chlorine gas.
How to fix it:
- Check the Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Every chemical comes with an SDS. Check Section 7 (Handling and Storage) and Section 10 (Stability and Reactivity) to see what it hates being near.
- Physical Barriers: If you’re short on space, use separate Secure Cabinets to provide a physical barrier between reactive groups.
- Distance: Keep incompatible groups at least 3-5 metres apart if they are in open storage, though dedicated cabinets are always safer.
3. Using the Wrong Shelving Material
We often see people using standard painted steel or even wooden shelving for chemical storage. Wood is porous; it absorbs spills and can become a fire hazard or a source of permanent contamination. Standard steel can quickly corrode when exposed to acidic vapours, compromising the structural integrity of your entire rack.
How to fix it:
- Go Stainless: If you’re dealing with corrosive chemicals or need to wash down the area frequently, Stainless Steel Shelving is the only way to go. It won’t rust or degrade when exposed to harsh vapours.
- Protective Coatings: For less aggressive environments, look for high-quality powder-coated Industrial Shelving that offers a layer of protection against the odd splash.
4. Neglecting Spill Containment
Spills happen. It’s a fact of industrial life. The mistake is assuming your floor will catch it. Many chemicals can eat through concrete, contaminate groundwater, or create a slip hazard that leads to further injury.
How to fix it:
- Use Sump Shelves: Invest in shelving or cabinets that include a "sump" or "bund." This is a recessed tray at the bottom designed to catch and hold leaks.
- Rule of 110%: Your containment should be able to hold at least 110% of the volume of the largest container stored on that shelf.
- Keep Spill Kits Nearby: Don’t wait for a leak to buy a spill kit. Keep one within arm’s reach of your Heavy Duty Shelving.
5. Storing High-Risk Chemicals Above Eye Level
It’s a common space-saving tactic: put the stuff you don't use often on the top shelf. But if that "stuff" is a 5-litre bottle of sulphuric acid, you're asking for trouble. Reaching up for a heavy, hazardous container increases the risk of it slipping, splashing onto your face, or falling and shattering.
How to fix it:
- The Eye-Level Rule: Never store liquids or hazardous chemicals above eye level.
- Heavy at the Bottom: Keep large drums and heavy containers on the lowest shelves. This also keeps the centre of gravity low, making your Storage Shelving more stable.
- Light/Dry items up top: Use higher shelves for lightweight, non-hazardous items like empty containers or dry PPE.
6. Inadequate Security and Access Control
If anyone can walk up and grab a hazardous substance, your security has failed. Whether it’s an unauthorised employee or a visitor, leaving chemicals in open Industrial Shelving in high-traffic areas is a major COSHH breach.
How to fix it:
- Lock it up: Use Secure Cabinets with high-quality locks. This ensures only trained, authorised personnel have access.

7. Ignoring Load Ratings
Chemicals are heavy. A single shelf full of liquid containers can weigh hundreds of kilograms. Many people buy "value" shelving and overload it, leading to bowed shelves or, worse, a total structural collapse.
