Chipboard vs Steel Shelves: Which Should You Choose? (Click)

Speedrax boltless shelving is available with chipboard or steel shelves on the same boltless steel frame. Chipboard shelves have a smooth, flat surface that's ideal for boxes, files, stock and retail storage, and our 18mm boards are thicker than the 15mm standard used by many competitors for extra load-bearing strength. Steel shelves suit uneven or heavy items like tools, tyres and paint tins, and wipe clean easily if anything spills. Both use the same frame and warranty, so the choice comes down to what you're storing rather than durability.

Medium duty units suit household, office and light retail storage, while heavy duty units use thicker-gauge steel and stronger bracing for garages, workshops and warehouses where you're storing tools, equipment or bulkier stock at higher weights per shelf. If you're not sure which you need, sizing up to heavy duty gives you the headroom to store heavier items later without having to replace the unit.

Lower units (around 1760mm) fit under sloped ceilings or beside doorways and make the top shelf easy to reach without a step. Taller units (up to 2400mm) make the most of floor-to-ceiling space in garages and warehouses, giving you more storage without extending your footprint. Measure your available height and leave clearance for door swing or sloped roofs before ordering.
