How to Measure Up for Shelving & Racking
More shelving and racking orders go wrong at the measuring stage than at any other point in the buying process. Getting the numbers right before you order is the single easiest way to avoid a delivery that doesn't fit the space, or doesn't get through the door in the first place.
Why Measuring Mistakes Are So Common
A quick tape-measure check of one wall feels like enough information to order shelving, but it usually misses the details that actually determine whether a system fits and works properly. Most measuring problems aren't about getting a number wrong, they're about not measuring the right things in the first place.
Floor Space: Length, Width and What Gets Forgotten
Measuring the length and width of the intended footprint is the obvious first step, but it's just as important to measure clearance around it, door swings, radiator projections, and anything fixed that a shelving run needs to clear. A space that looks rectangular and empty on a quick glance often has two or three obstructions that only show up once you're measuring properly.
Height: Don't Just Measure the Ceiling
Ceiling height sets the upper limit, but sprinkler heads, light fittings, and ductwork often hang lower than the ceiling itself and need to be measured separately. Shelving that technically fits under the ceiling but fouls a sprinkler head is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable problem.
Access Routes: Doorways, Corridors and Stairwells
The space where shelving will stand isn't the only measurement that matters, the route it has to travel to get there does too. Doorway widths, corridor turns, and stairwells all need checking against the delivered size of the shelving or racking, not just its assembled dimensions, since pre-built units that won't fit through a doorway have to be returned or rebuilt on site at extra cost.
Load-Bearing Checks Before You Measure Anything Else
